10.15.2015

Jim spent a little time this morning doing some more unloading of the box truck from our storage unit trip.  He was able to get some more cabinets off as well as some other bigger items.  I spent awhile putting all the drawers back into cabinets and taking off more boxes and emptying out two more cabinets from the truck.

Then Jim worked for quite awhile connecting the two main rafters to the dormer wall.  Everything had to be perfectly aligned and fastened all the way up.

After that, he started working on rafters again.  Here he is bringing another main  rafter up onto the deck.

First, he had to put the clip angle into place.

It's becoming quite the obstacle course of steel now - it takes awhile to figure out how to bring these giant pieces of steel where they need to go around all the braces and scaffolding!

Balancing the rafter on the scaffolding and getting ready to set it into place.

Fastening the rafter down to the ridge beam...

...and to the deck.  However, the obstacle course also involves Jim trying to squeeze into tight places and still be able to work!

Then it was back to the rafter building assembly line...Jim made 3 more dormer rafters after lunch.

Unfortunately, the support post that is holding up the ridge beam is the exact place that another rafter needs to go.  Moving the post required some delicate work so as not to move the position of the beam - since it's perfect right now.  Jim unscrewed the track from the bottom...

...and then carefully used the mallet to bump it over.  It just needed to be moved 2" but he had to move it slowly at both the bottom track and the top of the support post so that everything would remain stable.  He finally got it in a good position and got everything fastened back down.

Time for the next dormer rafter...

All in place...

Ugh...more of the ladder on the scaffolding thing that I don't like!  Jim is measuring for the next rafter...

Next rafter in place!

So let's do another one!

But before we can put the rafter up, Jim puts more screws in the top and bottom connection on the ridge beam.

Getting the next rafter into position...

Because there are so many forces on the wall from the rafters, Jim wanted to put some more screws in the bracing connections.  He may put up another brace tomorrow as well.

At the close of the day, Jim and I carried in the principal valley rafter - one of the two longest pieces of steel that we will use.  This is scary long - this one is 25' long.  You have to be very careful carrying it so that it doesn't buckle in the middle.  Another time when another man would be so helpful but we'll have to figure it out.

A couple views of the rafters on the carriage house - from the side...

...and the front.  These pictures were actually taken at the same time - the one below after the one above.  But the sun going down really makes for some shadows in the back.

We got our first composite roofing quote today - we are still waiting for Lowe's to come through with theirs.  It's going to be pricey but hopefully it's not out of the question.  Although to get a greater fire protection rating, the price would almost double so that's probably out of the question!
