10.20.2015

We had a little bit of overnight rain, so Jim got the sump pump going when he got to the site just to get the water out.  It's working well and makes a big difference - and I don't have to bail water!

However, once the clouds moved away in the morning, we had a wonderful day.  Bright sun and temperatures close to 60 - which felt so wonderful since we've been really chilly lately!

Jim spent some time this morning emptying out the truck of a few more cabinets and doing a little bit of rearranging/sorting on the ground floor.  Things are really looking organized down there.  If we have any rain this week, we plan on going back to the storage and getting everything except the pool table slate - we'll need another man for that.

Jim then got busy making the remaining rafters that connect to the valley.  There are the two longest ones as well as the shortest one.

After lunch, we got ready to install the rafters.  Here Jim is attaching a temporary clip angle to help hold the rafter in place until I can get it clamped.

Moving the rafter into position...

All in place and starting to fasten it down.

Time for the next one!

These rafters were really long but they went up and into place perfectly.

Because Jim would have to disassemble and move scaffolding in order to put up the small rafter, he's leaving that until he is in better position.  After all the big ones, that one will be simple!

The roof looks so amazing with all the rafters up!

Then it was time to switch gears - to getting ready to build the front wall!  Unfortunately, the shoring post for the ridge beam was in the way of us laying out the wall on the deck.  But before Jim could move the brace, he put a new one on the other side to make sure everything stays secure.

Once the new brace was in place, time to take the other one down.

After we did our measurements and laid out the wall design on the deck, it was time to cut the bottom track pieces and punch all the holes.

While Jim was working on making pieces, I moved the last of the boxes out of the truck and emptied the last cabinet so that Jim can move it out of the truck when he's ready.

Back up on the deck, we started laying out the tracks.  We will build this wall in two sections like we did the other gable wall - that worked really well.

We got the track pieces in the right place and then Jim cut the first stud.  There will be another ridge beam sitting on the middle point, so everything has to be exact.  Jim wanted to do a tiny bit of tweaking to the stud but it was too dark to work in the workshop so that will be on the agenda first thing tomorrow.  We are very excited to get this wall built - it will really change the look of the building!

We haven't heard for sure but we may have our next steel delivery tomorrow and they are calling for spotty showers so we'll see how the day goes.
