Jim cut the curve on more braces this morning...
Ready to go!
The center braces in the pavilion won't be exposed to the weather and therefore didn't need to be out of treated lumber. Jim ordered timbers to make them - he is getting ready to start cutting those...
Outside, Jim had to cut the 1/4" extra depth he wanted on the secondary beam pockets...
Measuring to make sure it's perfect...
Marking location for all the pegs...
Drilling the holes for the pegs...
Time to do prep work to install the next beam and put in the other back brace - so down came the temporary brace...
Jim also moved the scaffolding so that he could get the Bobcat back farther. Then he used the forks to lift up the back beam a bit...
Using the forks to push the beam down - everything snapped into place perfectly!
Back beam and braces done!
Jim put the bucket back on the Bobcat and moved it over to the front posts so that he could stand on it and do the beveling of the tenons...
Using the calipers to measure...
Chiseling just a bit off...
Putting up the backing wood on the end posts just in case...
Then it was time to get the beam!
It takes a lot of maneuvering to get this very long beam in the right place without hitting anything else!
Setting it on the tenons...
Pushing down to set everything in place...
Putting the first brace in...
Yay - the other beam is up and braces in! Jim wants to maybe tweak the fit of one of the braces but it looks fabulous!
After that, we uncovered our pile of timber and Jim loaded up the next beams to work on...
He brought them up to the scaffolding...
We uncovered the rest of the timber and spread them out a bit - they are so freshly cut that they need so breathe!
Once he got all his tools and equipment put away, Jim did some trimming. Then he came in and had to put on his TV repairman hat because my mom's tv wasn't working. Sigh. No rest for the weary!
