He got all the brick placement worked out, including the bricks in the rows directly above the soldiers to make sure everything came out symmetrical.
More brick ties....
As we were getting things ready after lunch, the doctor's office finally called - disappointing news. She said that Jim's latest scans show swollen tubes and recommended surgery. Jim stressed to her that he would like to get it done asap - this week if possible. However, when the schedule person called back, the earliest they could do it was August 19th! We don't like the idea of having to wait so long - this has been going on for months. Jim also has to get an EKG and complete blood work again (it's been over 30 days since his last workup). So all that news kind of put a damper on getting ready for brickwork.
But we eventually pressed on and made the mortar.
Jim first put a thin layer of mortar on the bricks on both sides where the lintel will sit - then set the lintel down. He had made a piece of flashing that went over the lintel.
Then we cut brick flashing to go on top...
The final product ready for brick...
Putting the first soldier into place...
This was such a different bricking technique than putting brick down horizontally - mortar had to be put on differently so it was hard to keep it off the face of the brick and it was tough to keep everything positioned perfectly.
All done!
Well...maybe not! Although you can see from the above picture that the soldiers looked great, Jim just wasn't happy. So down they came...
We'll just call the first time practice and start over!
Working down the row...
Last one! Practice makes perfect!
Jim is much happier now - they look fabulous! Now that the soldiers were done, time to work down the next row...
Measuring to make sure placement is good...
Jointing the soldiers...
Since we got a late start, it was late by the time we were done and cleaning up. So more pictures to come tomorrow!
