8.27.2016

I had some errands to run this morning so I headed out for those while Jim headed to the property.  He had lots of prep work to do for our planned afternoon brick work.

He reconfigured scaffolding again and got the next piece of angle cut and attached.

Jim had to cut the back of two bricks to fit around the anchor bolts for the lintels - very creative!

More creativity - Jim had to have a way to anchor the string to make sure that he got the bricks straight over the garage door lintel - it's too long to reach the end of the building.  So he used his hammer drill to drill a small hole in the mortar and inserted a nail.  Then he was able to run the string between the corner and the nail.  After we're done, he'll just fill in the hole with a little mortar.

When I got to the property, there was a strange truck in the driveway - it turned out that one of our neighbors stopped by for a tour.  He lives on the next street over and was riding his bike by the property a few days ago when Jim was locking up the driveway chain for the night.  He is a retired vet and owned the veterinary clinic in town for years.  He was a nice guy and he enjoyed seeing our project.  He said he wanted to bring his wife by soon.  It was nice to meet another neighbor but it always causes a bit of a disruption in the day.

We are starting to think about the next step - siding!  Jim wanted to bring down a pallet and take a look at it.  It's been stored outside for a long time so we had fingers crossed that everything was okay - and it appears to be.  They have every two pieces wrapped really well in plastic and then more plastic around a bundle.  The only issue is that some of the pieces are stuck together.  But in down time, I started unwrapping some of the bundles and carefully separating the stuck pieces.  We ordered them to be painted - so that was a great decision.  They're a nice gray color but not the exact color we want, so we will have to paint each piece.  But the fact that they are already painted means that they will have a great base coat already.

Early afternoon and it's time for a batch of mortar...

Jim started in the corner...

Putting the first brick over the lintel.  While not as hard as doing the soldiers, lintels are hard because the mortar joint has to be so small since the lintel takes up normal mortar area.

Putting the custom brick over the anchor bolt...

Putting the next custom brick over the anchor...

That row of bricks is now complete from corner to corner!  Jim had to put brick ties for the next course...

Working across...

Last brick in this course and in this whole front section!

The next course needed earthquake ties...

The next course is block...

Jointing...

Jointing over the lintel...

Clean up time...

Then it was back to some overhang work - putting up the drip edge.  It's always hard to change tasks - putting up drip edge requires a completely different set of tools to drag out!  I cut pieces of membrane that we will put up tomorrow over the sheathing.

Jim has the next piece of sheathing cut - another task for tomorrow.

Happy Birthday, Mom - we love you!
