It was cute...when I got to the property this morning, Jim poked out from the other side of the roof to say hi.  If you look closely, you can see him just to the left of the gable part of the roof.

He was busy working on shingles.

Before I got there, he had made and installed the next piece of steel fascia backing.  Then he cut the next piece of trim board to go on top and put primer on the cut edges.

Jim has gone about as far as he can on the back side at this point until some details get worked out.

Most of the afternoon was spent working out the details of the roof connection at the top.  When he put shingles on the front sides, he left a few off so that he would be able to incorporate it all together.  Great plan - but the trick was how to incorporate them all together!  With asphalt shingles, it would be easy - they bend.

He got out his heat gun and tried bending the shingle.  It's amazing - he bent PVC pipe with no problem at all when he applied some heat, but these shingles didn't want to bend at all!

He eventually got it to bend like he wanted and spent a lot of time installing and figuring out if the design would work and keep water out.

Here are the first two pieces - you can see how he bent them to go over the gable ridge.

Then he put another ridge shingle on top...

Then he bent another piece to blend it all in with the flat roof.  Amazing!!

I did some more trim board painting while Jim was working on the roof details.

This is a picture that Jim took from up on the roof showing the progress...

At the end of the day, Jim wanted to get the trim board installed.  He took it out the window...

But this was tough - again, these boards are extremely heavy and flexible - and look at all the scaffolding, ropes and hoses Jim had to work around, not to mention that he is 25' in the air!

He finally got it up and is putting it into place on his bracket...

Outside views are tough on the back but you can see that Jim is installing the trim board...

Touching up all the nail holes and primed areas...

Another great day - figuring out how to do some of these roof details has kept Jim up at night so it's nice when they are finished!

  1. The job you have done on that house is amazing. I could never hope to do anything like that; I struggle to put up curtain poles. I really like the picture of you hanging out on the ropes outside, looks like you're doing some kind of aerial adventure. Well done mate!

  2. The job you guys are doing on the house is wonderful. I enjoyed the detailed pictures of the roof and the bending of some of the shingles. That's too bad that it has been keeping Jim up at night thinking about it but what he worked out fits the roof and the other pieces perfectly.
