6.15.2016 - Stack flashing installed!

Jim worked on more grading at the end of the day yesterday - this upper driveway is really taking shape.  Hopefully we'll be able to get gravel on it before too long.

Jim got busy on shingles right away and got the west side of the dormer roof all finished!

He installed the new, permanent hooks over the ridge.  He can use these to tie the safety rope to while he's finishing and they will stay in case there's ever a need to get back up on the roof.

Now comes one of those details that Jim has kind of been dreading - the detailed work takes so long with not quite as much to show for all that work!  But very necessary - time to work on getting provisions for the plumbing stack to vent out the roof.

Jim first marked the area where he wanted the stack to go.

Back up on top, he had to figure out the cuts he would have to make to go around the boot.

Cutting out the hole in the middle of the shingle...

Done!

Trying it out for size with the boot...

The underside view...

Gulp...now Jim has to cut a hole in the sheathing on the roof!  He'll use his biggest hole saw and then have to tweak from there.

Cutting the hole...

We can see daylight!

Next, Jim had to take an extension cord out on the roof through the hole (being careful not to cut it!) and make the hole the right size.  Since the roof is at an angle and the pipe is straight, the hole has to be slightly oval.

Trying it out...

Time to cut the gasket on the boot - it has a scored area for a 4" pipe, which is what he is using.

The final product!

In place up on the roof!

Jim has to cut the next set of shingles around the boot...

Looks great so far!  Each step allows Jim to proceed further with the rows of shingles.

Before he sets it in place permanently, Jim gets the level out to make sure it's straight...

Cutting the top shingle...

Wow - looks amazing!!!

So happy that this is done and it turned out so well.  Jim is really close to having the rest of the shingles on too - so excited about that!  We'll be doing ridge shingles soon!
