7.10.2014 - Finally...a Permit!

Today was quite the day!  Jim started the morning on the phone with the Nudura rep going over his quote line by line.  The rep is supposed to make some final changes and we may be putting in our order tomorrow!

Then Jim headed to the land and I went to the concrete place in Glens Falls - they finally emailed and said our charcoal gray brick sample was in.  That was quite the wasted trip - the sample turned out to be some weird yellow-beige color.  You couldn't even imagine charcoal gray in it.  The guy at the block place couldn't explain it - he said he called to confirm they sent the right one.  At least we have a sample we're very happy with at this point.

We were working and we finally got a call from the building department - he said he had our permit ready!  Finally!  Jim left right away and went and picked it up.  It was quite expensive but - oh well - we have our building permit!  While he was talking with the guy, he set up an inspection appointment for our concrete pour for Monday afternoon.  Things are moving now.

So back to work on the footers - Jim got the step blocking all done.

And the rest of the day was spent working on the rebar.  Look at some of the crazy bends that had to be made in the step area - and this is all with the really heavy-duty 5/8" rebar.

These are the stirrup pieces that I bent yesterday - and had to bend more today.  Then I got to use the new wire tie tool and tied everything into place.  The rebar chairs we made weren't quite holding things up the way Jim wanted, so he came up with the ingenious idea to cut some PVC drain pipe to hold things up better.

The steel is all bent and ready to be tied in the bottom step area.

Looking good!

Jim heard the road crew working on the shoulder of the road this morning and went down and talked to them about our apron (the phone call I made on Monday obviously fell on deaf ears).  These guys said they would see about fixing our apron and came back later and actually did - at the end of the day we went down and found it looking nice!

Practically every day for the last 2 weeks, we have talked about going to Pope's Pizza to celebrate when our permit came in.  So it was finally here and we headed to Pope's for a pizza and a beer.  When we got there and sat down, we found out their cooler was broken and they didn't have any beer.  We decided to just head to Dango's for nachos instead.  It was a great celebration night!
