2.19.2017 - First fiberglass insulation!

Jim finished up the furring strips on the rafters in the kitchen area, necessary to change the pitch of the ceiling a little bit so that Jim can lower the ceiling a few inches over the banquette to allow for pendant lights.

Another view...

I got to see all the kitchen lighting he finished up yesterday too...

The next task at hand was to experiment with our first fiberglass insulation!  Jim has one bag just to see how it will work.  Cutting a piece of sheathing to make a form for cutting the angles...

Then it was time for our masks!  And, in honor of Jim's memory of putting up insulation in the Ohio house with Kyle where the tradition was to play head-banging music, Jim turned on Metallica to work by!

There is 144 square feet of insulation compressed into this package so we knew it would spring out once Jim cut it open...

Which it quickly did...

Using his template, Jim cut the first angle...

Putting in the first wall cavity...

We still need to put plastic over for a vapor barrier, but Jim wants to first see about some wire they have to make sure the insulation stays in place.

Working down the master bedroom closet wall...

Putting a piece in the cavity between the two bedrooms...

Jim has to cut the insulation where the wire is so that it makes a tight fit around the wire and leaves no voids.

Jim wanted to try the spray adhesive recommended by the Drywall Center to hold the plastic vapor barrier in place and decided to try it on the cavity between the two rooms.  Cutting the plastic...

Spraying the adhesive on the studs...

Putting the plastic in place...

Jim was expecting the adhesive to be more like a contact cement where you have to let it set up a minute to get tacky - this dried pretty quickly.  But it turned out nice - we'll see if it is still stuck tomorrow!

Jim tried a more spray and stick approach on the other side which seemed to work better.

All finished...

So...a good start to our insulation experiment!  There's still a lot to be figured out - imagine doing this procedure on the ceilings!

We felt like we were having a little heat wave today - you can see Jim is down to just one sweatshirt and we actually opened the windows while we were working on the insulation!
