7.15.2016

Jim and I both had early starts to our days - I had to head a little north to Glens Falls to take a fire school mailing to their larger post office so that it would get mailed quicker.  On my way back home, seeing the ski slopes reminded me that even though we may be sweating in these temps now, time passes too quickly and before you know it there will be snow on these hills!  So no complaining about the weather from us!

Jim's steel order from Albany was scheduled to be delivered today.  They typically come fairly early so he was up and ready to go by 7:30.  However, that wasn't early enough.  He got a call from Albany that the driver was at the property.  The driver was supposed to call early enough for Jim to get out there, which he obviously didn't do, even though he told the office he did.  The office told Jim that they told the driver to just drop the steel at the end of the driveway.  Jim left right away to go to the property.  However, when he got out there, the driver had dropped the steel and then dragged it on top of the chain link we have between two posts.  This is really heavy steel and the posts are original when we bought it - so obviously the heavy steel broke one of the wood posts.  Jim said the chain was just dragging on the ground.  So that was frustrating - that's one thing we don't have time to work on right now. Hopefully Jim can get it propped up enough to work for the time being.  But we at least got our steel - here's some of the angle pieces.

Yesterday, Jim also got the wire dropped to the electric box.  It fits perfectly in the cutout he made in the foam and he used some of our Pex staples to hold the wire in place.

Then the wire goes up through the grommets in the rafter tails and is ready to be dropped on the opposite side of the garage door.  Such an ingenious husband I have!

More brick cutting to start the day...

Time for the first batch of mortar!

Working on the front corner...

Then Jim got the first row started on either side of the man door.

First row done - Jim wants these bricks to sit up really well because they have hurricane clips on top of them, so the next row will happen tomorrow.

Jim made a custom piece of flashing to go on top of the opening to the electric box as well as to cover the wire.

Working on another row on the side...

Jim has to move his platform riser down as he goes so that he can reach!

Jointing the front...

Jim is able to use the brick carriers and carry 10 bricks back at a time, as opposed to me carrying 2 at a time!  I tried to lift one of these carriers up - it's amazing how heavy 5 of these bricks are!  Imagine all the weight that is being held by our brick ledgers!  Good thing Jim built everything so strong.

Prepping for round 2 - putting on another row of brick ties.

Time for the mortar...

Working in the back...

Up another step - always a big milestone!

End-of-the-day picture of the front...

...and the side.

The forecast was for a possibility of rain in the early evening, so as soon as we were done we got everything covered up.

It was a good thing we covered - Jim had just finished cutting some more brick when it started drizzling.  It never did more than sprinkle for a little bit but we didn't have to worry since everything was safe!
