1.20.2016

It was a cold day today but we still managed to get lots done - including the Worst.Wall.Ever!

Jim worked in the morning getting things ready, came home for lunch and then I went back with him.  He already had the wall frame put together.

He screwed together studs to make a double stud next to where the window will go.

Then attached that to the frame.

Then he attached the window header that he made yesterday to the wall.  It was much easier to do on the ground - this wall is over 11' tall!

However, because it was so high and we added the extra weight of the header and two double studs, it was really heavy!  Plus, if you look at the pictures above, we had to push the wall uphill to be able to stand it up on the concrete.  Jim usually takes more of the load, but this wall was the same on both sides and had no place to hold it in the middle.  It took 4 tries because I definitely have no upper body strength but we finally got it up on the concrete!  Then we were able to walk it over in place.  Whew!  It looks great though!

Jim's making sure it's nice and plumb.

Using the hammer drill to drill through the concrete so he can put a tap con in to hold it in place.

Putting together another double stud for the next wall....

Punching holes in the bottom track for the tap cons...

This wall has a few different challenges.  Because we had to brace the first wall, it kind of blocked access.  Jim always has another plan.  Here he's putting on the bottom track - it's small because the other set double doors goes in this space.

Putting together the other side of the wall...

Putting in the double stud and fastening everything together.

Jim had to put a little temporary brace between the two studs so that it wouldn't buckle when he lifted it up.

It's in place!  This one was certainly easier to lift - Jim could do it by himself - but because it had the long track at the top, it was a bit challenging.  Jim had to bring down the step ladder and attach the top track to the other wall.

Then he had to brace this wall by connecting a stud to the top of the wall and to the floor of the apartment.

End-of-the-day shot - the stairwell is really taking shape!
