6.10.2014

Yesterday, Jim and I went back to the brick and block place in Glens Falls to explore what they had in the yard.  We're still having trouble finding brick we like for the foundation of the carriage house and house.  We had hoped to find some and use it on the pedestal but that won't happen fast enough.  We've thought about split face block too but Jim really wants to use brick for the look as well as for its ability to stand up to weather pretty much forever.

Jim went back there today and brought home a sample of one of the bricks they had in the yard and we think it will work really well - it's a dark red with gray tinges in it.  Plus they have enough in the yard that we can get now which would be great - Jim could start bricking soon and get the electric going!

After lunch, Jim started taking the forms off the pedestal.  He had put our names on the top of the cap so I had to get a picture because it will be covered up by a cap eventually.

Jim had built the form really strong with tons of staples, screws and lots of pieces of wood.  So taking it apart took some time too.

But it came out beautifully!  Jim said it's probably the best looking concrete we've done - and that's saying something!  The vibrator really makes a difference in the end product.  We're thrilled with the way it looks.  You can see one of the bricks at the bottom that we are considering.

As Jim was taking apart the forms, I had the job of taking out each of those staples so that we can reuse the wood.  Jim got my pink hammer out - it's been a long time since I've used that!  It took a couple hours of hammering and pulling out staples but we were able to get it all done and the wood put away for future form work.

Jim did some clean up work around the base and then starting working on getting the second grounding rod put in.  They have to go 8'  deep so with all our rocks, that's not an easy task.  For the first one, Jim had the auger and dug 4' and then pounded it in the rest of the way.  For this one, he brought the excavator over to dig part way and then pounded it in.  So those are all done now.
