10.31.2019

Happy Halloween!  I hope it's warm and dry where your trick-or-treaters are but I think the overall forecast was for cold and/or rainy.  We have the rainy part of that equation but it was pretty warm today - the temperatures drop tomorrow and bring high wind warnings.  Good thing our generator is alive!

Jim was able to put a small relief cut on the back of the small pieces of molding after they were cut...

Trying it out for size - looks great!

Which meant that Jim was able to start priming...

All new molding pieces primed...

Then...drumroll...Jim started working on the Corian for the banquette table - I'm so excited about this!  He put on a new blade and different inset for his table saw that he uses when he cuts laminates or plastics.  It provides a tight fit around the blade and minimizes chipping.  It worked perfectly on the Corian!

Starting to cut!  This is scary since these pieces are so expensive but Jim makes sure he has a good plan in advance and then has no fear.

Cutting...

All done!

The two pieces for the top clamped together.  He wanted to do a little refresher reading before starting the gluing process.  Sure looks pretty!

To finish up the day, Jim wanted to continue filling in the cracks in the floor of the auto bay/metal shop.  This way, it will keep dirt and small creatures from getting in/out.  Because of the weather, Jim is postponing doing the epoxy until spring but he did order a gallon of the etching material to see how it works with the insulated concrete forms.

10.30.2019

I went and ran some errands this morning; while I was gone, Jim worked on my computer.  It was time to upgrade the operating system and Jim needed to make sure that my digital file player would work with the new system.  Unfortunately, Jim has to be my go-to person for dealing with my at-home business computer issues.  He worries when there is something that needs attention because he know that everything is critical for my work.  But he got everything working smoothly!

In the wood shop, Jim had a molding assembly line going today...

A lot more molding made - including small pieces to go next to the wall on the bedroom doors...

Jim continued winter prep - he moved the excavator next to the garage on the new gravel base.  He also brought the snow blower into the auto bay - he's going to upgrade the motor on it before the snow flies!

Then it was time to do all the electric checks for the generator.  The first step was to remove and isolate specific loads in the breaker box.  Jim left on some basic circuits for later testing - stove, kitchen and shop lights - and then switched the main breaker off.

The next step was to shut off the utility power at the meter pedestal, put the generator in manual mode and turned it on.  Then he switched the output breaker to on - so now the power goes into the switch box.

Now Jim is measuring voltage and frequency inside the switch box.  Everything checked out so then Jim turned the main breaker on to power the house loads.  We went inside the house, turned the stovetop and the oven on, which runs the generator to full capacity.

Under that load, everything was great; voltage and frequency were within spec.

Then we powered everything off and put the generator in automatic mode.  We simulated a utility power loss by switching the utility power off at the meter pedestal.  The generator came on within 30 seconds!  After letting it run for a couple minutes, we switched the utility power back on and the generator switched the utility power back to the house and turned itself off.  SUCCESS!!!!

What a relief - now if something happens, we will have backup power.  And it's perfect timing - we are under a high wind warning starting tomorrow evening through Friday evening so you just never know!

10.29.2019

Jim worked in the wood shop this morning, planing more wood for moldings.

On these pieces of moldings, he didn't make the relief cut in the back - he's going to use them to cut the smaller pieces he needs for one side of the bedroom doorframes that is close to the wall.

This afternoon, it was all about the generator!  Jim did some voltage testing in the house first.

He shut off power to the house and then opened the generator - time to install its battery!  Putting some anti-corrosion grease on the posts...

Check out this can - Jim said he has had it since he was about 20!

A little grease on the connectors as well...

Battery is all connected...

Once it was powered on, Jim had to walk through a lot of steps to connect it to the wifi and get it to start downloading lots of information.

Then he turned it on to test it - you can see the green light showing it's on!

Tomorrow he'll work more on it but this was a huge step!

10.28.2019

After all the craziness of the day yesterday with Jim's trip to NYC to sell the truck, we both got a good night's sleep!  We decided to have our traditional Sunday pancakes this morning since Jim had to get such an early start to the day yesterday.

Jim brought up a piece of the primed door frame molding to see how it will look - we love it!

Jim got more wood planed and pieces glued to make some more!

Then the gas company showed up to make the gas line connection for the generator.  He was happily surprised to see that Jim had made the connection into the generator; he was expecting to do that as well.

Pressurizing the line to check for leaks.  All was good!  Now Jim will have to get the battery in the generator and go through all the test/start ups to get it online.

In the afternoon, Jim headed to the insurance office and the DMV to turn in the plates and cancel insurance for the truck - the final pieces of the puzzle!

Jim also did a final cutting of the grass before calling it a day.

10.27.2019 - Truck sale!

As I start to write this, Jim is on the Amtrak heading to Saratoga; I'll leave to pick him up before long and we'll hopefully stop and get a bite to eat before heading home.  Jim's had quite the day.

However, the adventure of selling the truck has been going on behind the scenes for awhile.  After not getting much of a response with his Albany Craigslist ad, he ventured out and advertised it both on eBay and in the NYC Craigslist.  He got a lot of inquiries - the eBay ad got almost 1,000 views before he pulled it!

But one person was very interested.  However, they came with lots of scary baggage.  The story was that the buyer was located in St. Maarten in the Caribbean.  He owned a laundry company and was looking for an Isuzu truck.  Of course, when you advertise on Craigslist, you have to be really careful to filter out the scams because there are a lot of them.  This one had lots of red flags.  However, the guy said that his brother-in-law lived in Queens and would be the intermediary for the sale.

They eventually arranged a time for this guy to look at the truck.  Jim met him in the Lowe's parking lot to make sure there were people around.  The guy was very nice, didn't dither on the price (another red flag), signed a bill of sale, and gave Jim a 20% cash deposit.  He went back to NYC and Jim took the truck and the cash home.  Trying to be diligent, we even checked the money with a counterfeit pen - it all appeared to be legit.

Then more craziness began - Jim had agreed to take the truck down to NYC as part of the deal and kept trying to set up a schedule.  The Queens guy apparently went on vacation down to St. Maarten, no one returned texts, and the wondering set back in.  This went on for a few weeks - Jim would text both of them and not get any satisfaction.  At this point, we had their cash and the truck but Jim was also thinking ahead to Plan B.

But Jim was also doing the behind the scenes work in case it went through - talking to the insurance company, getting all the paperwork in order including an updated final bill of sale, and cleaning out the truck.  Another great part of this sale was that the guy didn't want Jim to put a new door on the back - but he wanted the old door panels so Jim tied them down to the floor.  And waited.

Finally, just yesterday, all the stars aligned, Jim got an address and they agreed that Jim would bring the truck down today.  Thankfully, Kyle was a great help in figuring out the logistics of this trip.  Like who would know that there are certain roads that trucks can't travel on in the city so you need to use a special truck navigation app?  Kyle found a Home Depot near the address and arranged to meet Jim before heading to the guy's house.

Jim got up early and was heading out about 6:45 this morning.

But the trip down was so stressful for Jim once he got close to the city.  Jim thought that the traffic would be less on a Sunday and maybe it was, but it was still crazy.  It was difficult to hear and see the map in the truck navigation app so Jim basically had to wear his readers and drive with the phone in one hand.  Then add to the fact that it was raining the entire way, Jim was driving this huge truck and not having a clue where he was going - Jim called me at one point and said he was never driving to NYC again!  We haven't talked much yet but he already told me a few crazy stories - like he was in the middle of 3 lanes stopped at a red light when not one but three cars in the left lane turned right in front of him!  He told Kyle that people don't drive like that in Saratoga!  Then there was the problem with tolls and bridges - this app took Jim over the George Washington Bridge twice.  We had already turned in our EZPass for the truck and they didn't accept cash.  They apparently take a picture of your license and bill you - however, Jim saw that it was going to be almost $50 for a trip across the bridge!

Jim finally got to the Home Depot and Kyle came shortly after.  They went to the guy's house which was in a pretty terrible neighborhood and eventually it all worked out.  The guy gave him cash which Kyle was trying to count out, using a storage tub as a table in their garage, and except for 4 $100 bills the rest was all $20 bills!  But finally the deed was done - the guy signed the bill of sale and Jim signed the title over to him.

Here's a picture of the truck in its new, albeit temporary, home.  They are apparently going to be making arrangements to ship it to the Caribbean.  They said they would send pictures to Jim but we'll see if that happens

Then thankfully Kyle was there to drive!  They headed to Yonkers which was an Amtrak station north of Penn Station so they would have some time to get something to eat and visit before Jim had to get on the train.

However, then the train thing was a bit difficult.  There wasn't a place to buy tickets in the station; thankfully, the conductor left him on the train and he did it over the phone.

I'll post this once I get home - I'm just so glad this all worked out - I was more than a little worried since we've all heard of one too many Craigslist sales taking a bad turn.  But Jim did all the preparation he could ahead of this and then has no fear!

I'm off to go pick him up at the train station!  This was such a stressful day that it had seemed like forever since I saw Jim.  The Saratoga train station is small and quaint - I sure was happy to see Jim get off the train!

Home again - we went to one of our favorite places to eat, Bailey's, and then to Ben & Jerry's for an ice cream to celebrate.  Jim is so happy to be home!  It was a good, successful trip and we're so thankful to Kyle for all the assistance - but there's no place like home!

10.26.2019

Jim started priming all of the door moldings today...

Spread out over 3 drying areas - all primed!

The rest of the day Jim spent working on getting things together for a hopeful box truck sale transaction tomorrow.  Crazy story - details tomorrow afterwards!

Off to church...

10.25.2019

I helped Jim move his brake over to the west side of the wood shop and then he rearranged his other tools.  It looks really nice now and is a bit more usable.  It probably won't be the last set up but it's good for now!

Then Jim spent most of the day working on door frame moldings.  Starting to run a piece through the molder...

It takes two passes through the molder  - and they are slow passes - once to make the design and then Jim puts it through again to smooth out any marks...

Amazing how this intricate design comes out the other side!

Cleaning up a bit...

All the moldings are now shaped!  This is about 100' of molding.

Next step is to sand them all...

Jim did take a break this afternoon to spread the rest of the eco-rubble on the upper driveway...

The forecast is for some rain tonight so Jim is happy that he got this done...

Jim also attended to some project management work today - he called the gas company to see if they would come out and make the connection to the generator.  At first, they told him it would be 7-10 days.  They called back later in the afternoon and scheduled it for Monday morning!
