There was still one thing left to do before concrete day, which Jim accomplished this morning. Jim told the contractor that he needs to start placing concrete in key areas first to load the shoring correctly. Typically, they would start in the back corner and go across each bay. But that would load down the stringers and not the most solid support area - the towers. So by placing concrete on those areas first and then going back to the end and working across, everything will be stable. So he marked big "X's" with blue paint to show them where to start. I have such a smart husband!
Then Jim had to start moving block. He had to offload a pallet of block to the Bobcat by hand - it's just too heavy of a load to lift.
First, he had to get busy setting up the water, electricity and the saw to the right measurements. Then it was time to cut. By the time I got there at lunchtime, he had cut this whole pallet!
The saw works great - however, after all that cutting, it left a wet mess in the bottom tray that needed to be cleaned out.
Scooping out all the wet concrete mess...
...and hosing everything down.
Then it was time to unload the next bunch by hand again from the truck to the pallet on the Bobcat.
Back to cutting...
At the end of the day, he got all of the block cut! Doing it this way saved hundreds of dollars - but poor Jim moved that 3,500 pounds of block around probably 3 times - from the truck to the Bobcat, from the pallet to the saw, from the saw to the pallet! We'll still need more block but this is a great start!
