6.1.2015 - update

Well...as things go sometimes, the rain fell pretty steady most of yesterday and today.  Of course, after all the backfilling and grading work we've been doing, we worried about the consequences of hard rain.  Jim went out on Sunday and said things weren't too bad.  He spent quite a bit of time trimming around all the pine trees going up one side of the driveway all the way to the meter pedestal.

The weather forecast for Wednesday and Thursday still looked great though, so we were optimistic about a concrete pour this week.  However, Jim got a text last night from the contractor that the concrete pumper truck is not available until Friday - when again, rain is in the forecast.  Groan.  So we're playing the waiting game again.

Meanwhile, Jim has been stuck at his desk the last couple days.  He said he felt like a kid skipping school - he just wasn't where he was supposed to be!  But he used the time wisely - he's been working on the brick layout for the carriage house.  He has made drawings for where every brick will go and which ones will have to be cut - it's amazing!  Jim is going to put a first row of concrete block on top of the ICFs to make a transition from them to the brick.  No sense burying expensive brick underground - we want to conserve as much as possible to use on the house.  We went to Lowe's last night and bought some block that will have to be cut to size - it's much cheaper to cut them in half than to buy the correct size.  He bought some to try and see how it goes.  So we will be able to get started on some of that while we wait for concrete.

While we were at Lowe's, we also looked at some appliance options for the carriage house.  Jim has to be in an order for sheathing with his rep soon and we want to add appliances to that to up the price and hopefully get a better corporate discount.  So it's been fun to look at all those options!

On the way home from Lowe's, we stopped at the land to check things out.  This is probably the worse damage - all of the fine silt from the backfilling we did washed into the open trench where we were still working on water lines and totally filled it in.  Ugh - that looks like lots of hand shoveling is in our future!  But it's still not as bad as it could have been.  The area around the septic system and all the infiltrators looks pretty solid.
