6.23.2015

Well...as I write this, in less than 10 hours, the concrete trucks will be pulling up the driveway - at last!  So this was really a stressful day before.

It rained overnight and was a little drizzly this morning - scary, but the forecast continued to be good for tomorrow.  The rain doesn't help either because everything inside the building was all wet again.  Plus you hate for the driveway to be soft with all those big trucks coming.  Thankfully, the soil drains amazing well so it seems in great shape.

Jim went to Lowe's this morning and to pick up the rest of his cold-formed steel.  When he picked up his order last week, a couple pieces were bent.  They told him he could keep them but they reordered new ones.

Then he got busy.  He finished up details for the door sill.  He put rebar in to keep it from lifting up if water ever got underneath somehow and froze.

That required drilling into the concrete about 4" and placing the rebar.

Because of the ground being damp, he decided to change the base on one of the support beams.  In addition, he put probably 50 more screws in the shoring on the stringers.  He also had to clear out all the tools, work tables and miscellaneous supplies that we've kept in the carriage house to keep everything safe from any concrete drips from up above.

Later in the afternoon, it was time to get the deck ready!  The plastic that we put on really held through all kinds of weather.

All the plastic ties had to be snipped off.  Then, because of the recent rain, all the plastic had standing water in it.  More water inside the building was the last thing we needed so we came up with a good plan.  We snipped all the ties, then we each took a side and gathered up all the edges and walked each piece over to the side of the building and then tossed it over - it was like giant water balloons!  I told Jim that we needed a picture of how that looked!  Of course, after it was done, I had to go pick up soggy, muddy plastic wrap from all around the building.  But it was a success - we kept most of the water away from the deck.

Jim fastened a ramp up to the deck for the workers and we cleaned out any leaves or twigs that got left behind.

We used a piece of the house wrap that was on the deck to cover the trusses just to make sure concrete didn't get splashed from the trucks.  We also covered the brake, the brick pile in the back, and a few pieces of equipment that were left in the carriage house.

Jim also had to make sure the concrete sealer sprayer was working properly.  It's been stored for quite awhile and hasn't been used in years, but thankfully Jim cleans things well after a job so he got it working well.

So....deep breaths!  After all this time, it feels almost surreal that it is happening tomorrow!  The forecast looks great - we had some dark clouds roll in late this afternoon and there were severe thunderstorms out for just a little south of us, but we were dry all day.  Tomorrow looks fabulous - upper 70s, lower humidity and practically no chance of rain.  Picture perfect!

Kyle and Julia are coming to experience this event with us!  They are actually on their way now - they got a car and are driving up.  It will be great to see them and have them here.

Best get to bed - tomorrow's a big day!
