Jim did some planing of wood for making moldings...
He took a few minutes to clean up the cutting blades on the molder as he prepared to switch knives. It's important, especially when using pine, to keep everything clean and sharp.
Then it was time to fabricate the Corian countertop that will go on the top of the newly-installed set of cabinets! Jim had to cut longer blocking pieces of wood and plane them to the exact thickness as the other ones so that the Corian is supported and sits perfectly flat. There are two cuts in this section - as before, once he cuts it with the table saw, he has to use the router to make a mirror image cut. He has pieces of plexiglass the exact size of the distance he needs between the two sections. He gets it all set up, clamped in place, and then just uses the router to take just a sliver off both sections at the same time.
All done! We tried to match this very random and different pattern as best we could - Jim even made another cut on one of the sections to get a little better match. We're very happy with it now.
Next it was time to get the epoxy out. This is very time critical - you only have a short window to use the epoxy once it is mixed. Jim has to put a small bead down each side...
Then pushes the two pieces together...
...and clamps them into place.
Time to do the next section...
Pushing the two sections together...
And clamping...
Jim had to reconfigure his Bessie clamps to make a very long clamp that will hold the entire piece in place while the glue dries.
Jim is just using a small tool to insure that the pieces are completely level at the glue joint...
Even though the epoxy hardens quickly, Jim is letting it set up until tomorrow before he does any more work on it. This is so exciting to see another piece of Corian come together!
After cleaning up from all that, Jim decided to use the rest of his day to work on attaching the front brackets for the drawer flies. Of course, as it seems to go, he had to do a little modification - one of the screws for attaching the file cabinet was in the way of the bracket.
Putting my temporary counter back into place!
The Hudson River with the backdrop of mountains was so beautiful today when I went to the post office. You can see the river was full of floating ice. We are under a Winter Storm Warning tonight into Sunday and are forecast to get 6-8" of snow, plus it's bitter cold.
