Happy Mother's Day - especially to my wonderful mom! Hope everyone had a great day!
It was a cool and little drizzly day today, so Jim stayed inside and did door work. Today was the day to make everything fit together by making the mortise cuts that the tenons will mate with. He first made edge cuts with his table saw on the pieces.
Then he used his dado blade to cut the grooves...
A demonstration of how everything will fit together...
The door panels will fit in the grooves Jim made; however, the other pieces have longer tenons so that they are held securely in the door rails. In order to do that, Jim has to use a special mortice chisel and chisel out the section by hand, using his Thor mallet as well! I always knew he was a superhero!
All hand chiseled... Since Jim is using pine for these doors as opposed to the oak we used in Ohio, he said it's easier to chisel but more apt to split.
Now this piece fits perfectly into the rail...
At this point, Jim decided to try a different approach. He had one milling bit that he got to work with his drill press. Once he got it all set up, he was able to make a precise cut in a fraction of the time and energy that the hand work entailed.
Look how nice this fits together...
More cuts made...
One whole side is cut and fit!
Working on the other side...
Time to take it apart and do some gluing. Obviously, this all has to be done in a certain order so that Jim can get the panels in between. So first the bottom H shaped piece is glued.
Meanwhile, Jim has the two bottom panel pieces being glued...
The door is really taking shape - very exciting!
