Jim got the mounting board tacked into place...

Starting to attach...

A bead of caulk around the board...

All done and drying.  Next step is painting, which required us to go through our fifty shades of gray paint supply to figure out which color gray the hallway is - ha!

3.30.2025

The weekend went by in a blur, as Jim and I were busy doing paperwork for my mom's care, plus we visited both her both days.

But Jim still managed to get a little work done in the shop, drilling holes in the door for the barn door hardware...

3.28.2025

Jim got all the tape off the barn door rail and painted the ends a bit, although they'll be up against the wall and you'll never see them.  But Jim does things the right way no matter!

He got the gable framing pieces cut...

The sun disappeared this afternoon and it was a bit breezy, but we decided to head outside and try and finish up some loose ends.  Jim was testing the fit of the bottom gable piece...

He wanted to get clips put on the back side of the rafters, so he started working on those...

The view from above...  The screws on the bottom surface have to go through the steel framing - Jim had to grind off the wings from his bigger steel screws and then they worked great.

Once the right side was done, he went up top and finished putting all the necessary screws connecting the rafters to the ridge board...

3.27.2025

My key fob was pretty much destroyed - Jim has extended its life with electric tape that worked for quite a while.  But he ordered me new cases and he switched them today.  He had to make a few modifications because the battery didn't fit quite right, but he got them fixed and we tested them.

Jim made the mounting board for the barn door rail to size...

Finding the studs...

Marking placement holes...

Turning over the edges...

Testing the board and transferring stud markings...

Jim made countersink holes for the screws to attach to the wall...

Starting to prime the board...

All primed...

Jim's going to paint the board and screws the same color as the wall, so a coat of primer on top of the screws...

The rail is a bit too long and Jim will cut a bit off each end.  He put tape over the ends so that it wouldn't get scratched while being clamped and it will help keep the cut nice as well...

Setting the rail up in the clamps on the saw...

A perfect cut..

We walked out to the shed today - next step will be cutting the wood for the gable end framing.  Jim was showing me how there will be a piece on top of this wall as well, that the framing will attach to...

3.26.2025

Yesterday was the one-year anniversary of my surgery and our wonderful news that the tumor was benign!  We decided that it was a worthy occasion to celebrate, so in the afternoon we went and visited my mom, went to Home Depot, and then went to The Local.  It was a great evening and it was a big reminder of just how blessed we are!

Jim has continued to work on coming up with crown molding ideas for the kitchen...

Our barn door hardware came in and it looks amazing!  While we were at Home Depot, we bought a nice handle for the door.

However, we scoured the blog looking for pictures of the inside of this wall, hoping that there was blocking there that Jim could use to attach the rail.  Unfortunately, this is one of those times that we didn't know exactly what we were going to do downstream, so Jim doesn't have the necessary blocking.  Doing some measurements...

In lieu of cutting the drywall to put blocking in, Jim is considering making a backing board that would attach to the wall that he could use to attach the rail.  We were just discussing possibilities with this sample board.  We think it will work fine and figure it's definitely worth a try before cutting into the wall and having to make all those repairs.

Using the jointer to start making the board...

And the planer...

We don't mind a spring snow - the ground is all covered again for a little while!

Jim did a lot of computer work today, but still found some time to work in the shop.  He's experimenting with crown molding for the kitchen...

3.23.2025

The weather was much colder today - it got into the teens overnight, so no outside work today.  Instead, Jim sand and prepped the front side of the door and got it painted.  He also ordered the hardware for the door, so it's getting close to being ready to hang!

3.22.2025

No pictures from yesterday - Jim worked on the computer in the morning and then after lunch, my mom had a doctor appointment and Jim went with me to help with all the transfers.  I think mom was glad to get back and relax a bit - probably more walking than she's done in a while.

Today was the first official day to work on the shed.  We didn't have much time before church, but Jim wanted to just get out and reacquaint himself with the project and where he left off.  He had brought up the fascia boards to hopefully get those up.  He put a jig up to help keep the board in place...

Then he was able to get it in place and start fastening...

This side all in place and fastened...

Moving over to the other side, Jim put the jig up...

Then we were able to lift it in place and Jim started fastening.  He got this one all fastened in place as well before cleaning up for the day.
