1.25.2016

Jim has been working on his steel order for awhile - this one is mostly for the stairwell roof so there are lots of calculations to figure out the precise pieces he needs.  Plus, the plans call for a little dormer roof with a half-round window...that's going to be super complicated.  Jim wants to build that as a separate piece and then install it in the roof.  So he has to have previsions for that roof and be able to make it work with the rest of the roof structure.

They are going to deliver the bulk of the order but Jim picked up the studs and track he needed to finish some of the window frame details.

Putting in the stud above the door frame...

The piece of track on the bottom of the header for the round window is next...

Putting the stud in underneath the header...

Then the studs around the window frame...

Obviously, the pretty gray side of the window will go to the outside and the window will only fit from the outside in, but Jim was just trying it on for size!

Finishing the rest of the window frame details...

After all the framing details are essentially done, it's time to turn our attention to a totally new project - the landing!  Jim brought down the mount for the laser level and attached it to the wall so that he could project a line where the landing will go.

Marking the line...

Now all of Jim's advance thinking and planning come into fruition.  Back when we were building the shop walls, Jim put up extra pieces of steel where the landing would be attached to the carriage house wall.  That way, he's attaching it to steel and not just plywood to make it extra strong.  In fact, Jim wants to go through pictures tonight to see exactly what he did under the door header.

Jim first used a scrap piece of track to make the footprint of where the track will attach to the wall.  Then he attached little pieces of steel to act as ledger boards to enable him to put the track up, clamp it down, and then fasten it.

Punching a few holes on the end so that he can attach it enough to hold it in place.

The first piece of the landing is up in place!
