1.21.2016

Jim went out to the site late morning to get things ready - the mornings are really cold now which means all of the steel and equipment is frozen too!  But he was able to get things ready for our next wall section.

After lunch, we got busy assembling the wall. There are just too many obstacles and the ground drops way off at the side so we are building this wall in place.   Jim got the track in place at the bottom and the two studs on either end that connect to the existing wall sections.  You can see at the bottom that the concrete is at a different level than the sills - Jim ordered studs of two different heights to compensate and everything fit perfectly!

Connecting the end studs together.

Making the connection on the end of the wall...

Once the wall was fastened a little, Jim was able to take down the top section of scaffolding so he had more room to maneuver and work.

Putting up the top track section.

Fastening it at the top to the studs...

This is a very precarious position Jim had to get in to be able to put the outside screws in to fasten the track to the studs.

Once the top track was in place we were able to dismantle the tower of scaffolding on the cement.  We're still going to need some scaffolding here, but Jim needs it on wheels to be able to better maneuver where he needs to be positioned.

Once we took the scaffolding off, even the wood was frozen to the concrete!  Jim had to carefully use the hammer to loosen it without messing up the surface of the concrete.

Then it was time to put studs in the wall!

Putting fasteners in at the bottom...

Putting another stud in...

...and the last one in this wall section is in place!

Jim had to do the fastening on top of the track for the last studs...

The front view...this gives a good idea of how the stairwell will look and how it all fits in with the elevation of the land.

Last task of the day was to build a section of scaffolding on wheels.

It was another really chilly day with a brisk wind.  I don't know how Jim does it working with the steel all day.  Just carrying a few pieces of scaffolding up from our pile left my hands aching with the cold!
