9.6.2019 - Roofing all done!

This has been a week of some big check marks on the to do list - first siding and today roofing!  A look at the day...

The first task Jim did was to take off the bottom window in the master bedroom.  He had this window and the two cantilever windows to get stained and poly'd before winter.

Staining the frame of the window...

He then brought the bottom sash down, taped and prepped it for staining...

All stained...

Jim put up a temporary piece of plywood over the bottom to keep out the chilly nights that we've been having!

Then it was on to working on the peak of the roof.  He first on some ridge vent material to help keep bugs out...

Then he put up a starter hip shingle.

Next he had to try and make a cap for the peak.  He took a regular roof shingle, made a cut down the center, and then softened the pieces with his hot air gun so that he could mold them...

Once it was bent, he clamped it in place to firm up.

Meanwhile, he started working on the trim boards.  For the trim board over the window, he made a rabbet cut so that it would fit over the shingles.

You can see the cut at the bottom of this piece as he puts a coat of primer on it...

Fascia board installed and working on putting the trim board on...

Fascia and trim board all up and caulked!

Then it was back to working on the peak.  His transformed shingle...

Jim also used lots of Zip tape and caulk as he assembled the peak to make sure no water can infiltrate.

Wow - looks so beautiful!

Jim decided to take off the highest roof jack from the side - the others have to wait until we move scaffolding around to the back.  But he had a tough time getting the left side jack out because it was so tight with the hip shingles so close.

But it's off - these jacks have been in place on this roof for a long time so it's wonderful to see them coming down!

Great progress today!  Jim ended the day by doing some grass cutting.
High 72/Low 48 - beautiful!
