12.8.2015

The plan today was to do the underlayment on the other side of the gable roof.  But again, Mother Nature had different plans.  There are a couple key factors that go into the right situation to put on the membrane - the roof material can't be wet because then it won't stick (plus you can't work on the roof when it's wet) and then the temperature needs to be right - not too hot or the backing gets too sticky but not too cold because then it won't stick.

The roof was wet when Jim got to the site.  It was another frosty evening so everything was wet.  While he waited for the sun to appear to dry things out and warm up, he started putting on the drip edge.  He didn't want to go any further up because of the surface being wet.

So we switched gears and put the strapping on the front wall, in anticipation of building that wall up.  Plus it keeps the sheathing firmly connected and flat.

The sun still wasn't breaking through the clouds, so we decided to finish the sheathing on the back edge of the roof.  Jim is able to put the pieces onto the roof from inside...

...and then slide them into place.

Next piece going up...

This was the last full width piece before the very top course.

We needed one more piece of sheathing so Jim just carried it over.  Because of the frosty mornings, it's getting kind of muddy in places when it starts thawing out.

The plan was to cut this piece in half lengthwise and then use one half for the main roof section and the other half to finish off the shed dormer eventually.  These are our last pieces of sheathing on the main structure roof!

Sliding up the last piece...

...and putting it into place!

Looks amazing!

Before switching gears again, Jim finished installing the drip edge on the front roof.

The next task was to start building the wall between the two roof sections.  Jim went into the shop and built 3 studs to get started.  You can see how Jim custom makes each stud to fit perfectly.

Putting up the first stud...

He has to attach the top of the stud to the shed dormer roof while standing on the other roof section!

Putting up the last of the studs he made today.

It was getting dark, but you can see the studs next to the newly-sheathed roof!  Jim stayed and made 3 more studs after dark.
