9.25.2014

'Twas the day before concrete...and what a long day.  This has been such an intense week for Jim - I know he can't wait until the concrete is in, set and finished.  But until then, lots and lots of work to be done.

Jim marked these holes on the foam in the stairwell area.  This is where anchor bolts will be attached that will help support the landing.

Then he had to cut out the foam...

...and he made this board that he connected the anchor bolts to.  He put another bolt and washer on the outside so that he can take the board off after the concrete is set.

Then he attached it all to the foam.

He also had to put the thimble in that will bring heat into the basement area if we decide to go with an outdoor wood burning furnace as our major/supplemental form of heat.

Then it was back to finishing up all the shoring and bracing.  Below is a completed bulkhead area.

One of Jim's main focuses today was the shoring around the garage doors.  In this picture you can see that he attached wood beams to the sides of the doorframes to help brace the steel and all the concrete above.

Here he's attaching the wood beam to the other door.

He also attached an alignment system to the fronts of the garage door area - attached them to the concrete footer just to keep everything straight and secure.

The day was getting late but we still had work to do - more steel!  This time we had to make over 60 pieces of steel that will be set into the concrete after its poured and will bond the concrete to the deck eventually.  I measured and marked all the pieces and Jim cut them.

Then he marked all the places they will need to go with an "X" on the foam so we would make sure to get everything in the right place tomorrow.

One last addition - a small thimble to bring electricity to the front area for lights eventually.

Kyle and Julia have graciously offered to come up and help us with the pour tomorrow.  Their bus doesn't come in til 1:00 am so hopefully Jim can catch a few minutes of well-deserved shut eye before he goes to pick them up!
