6.20.2015

This morning, Jim started experimenting on the brake.  He had picked up a roll of aluminum flashing.  He was still undecided about how to do the flashing because the block in the back is still wet from the rain so membrane won't stick.

The brake works really well - this was a really good buy.  First Jim measured the length he wanted the piece.

This was another good buy - a cutter for the brake.  It slides along the front and cuts it like it was paper.

Then you put the piece back in and bend it.

For his experimental brick flashing, he made bends on both side so that there were no sharp edges, and then bent one side so that it would lap down over the block.

He had to hand cut and then crimp 1/2" so that it would make a bend at the side of the block.

This is how they looked....

The front block is all dry so we decided to work on membrane.

Jim's first plan for the flashing was to use this membrane - similar to Nudura's but it has a texture to it so it's much more firm.  After trying a piece, we were pretty sold that this was the way to go.

You can see it laps over the Nudura membrane on the bottom and will make a total waterproof barrier for any moisture that may find its way behind the brick.

We moved on to putting the Nudura on part of the front.

Then Jim tried to see how using the brick flashing roll would work on these steps.  It takes some work because there are so many corners which are hard with sticky membrane, but really did make for a nice final product.

It was my job to cut all the pieces of membrane - Jim had to scrape and clean all the areas and then put it on.  (I know how to pick the easy jobs!)   Plus, most of this work involved Jim kneeling on either gravel or dirt for hours on end.

Plus working underneath the deck makes it lots of fun too!

But it pays off - this corner and side of the building are all ready for brick!

We went around to the back to see how the membrane would stick to the block back here - not as well where it touched the block, but he can at least work upward on the brick if we get the ledge done.

The back corner is started...

Another good day's work - at least we ironed out a system and can proceed onward!
