6.13.2015

It rained overnight on Thursday and the blocks were too wet to lay.  So Jim and I divided and conquered...I took the work 4Runner in for an oil change (which Jim absolutely hates but is necessary for the moment).  I also picked up a new trimmer head that he had ordered that finally came in.  Meanwhile, he spent the morning finishing up the shoring he had been working on and then getting ready for the next block area...he got all of these brick ledges scraped and then got all the block cut and laid out.

So today it was back to work on laying block!  Mixing up the mortar...

...and getting started.  The very bottom sill was still too wet so we started on the first step.

Working on the corner...

Finishing the top step on the front side.

This last block was where we had run out of mortar last time, so it's all done now.

Looks great!!!

Here's another thing Jim has been working on...making jigs for the brick installation.  The brick extends 1/4" past the block, so Jim made a jig at the top to be able to extend a string down...

...and then fastened the string to another jig at the bottom.  So now he's got a reference for lining up the brick at this back corner, which is where he will start.
