10.6.2015

It was a little bit of a disjointed day but we still got lots accomplished.  We were hoping the steel would come today but Jim called and it will be delivered tomorrow.  However, Lowe's called and our windows were scheduled to come today.  Of course, then they called back later and said the delivery wouldn't be until 5:00 or 6:00.

Jim's main focus today was to get the garage door operational - we wanted to bring the windows inside plus we need to move things out of the barn and storage and will have to have access to the space.

First, Jim had to come up with a way to attach the track to the bottom of the deck.  He was able to use his hammer drill and put smaller concrete anchors through the deck and into the concrete.

Making sure everything is level and plumb...

Attaching the spring connections to the door frame...

Setting the spring assembly into place...

I thought this was hilarious...these are the instructions for the winder assembly for the spring on the garage door.  Jim said they are the perfect "man" instructions - there are no words at all - just pictures!  Too funny!

Jim needed to make a plywood backing for the center support so he cut two pieces to size.

Putting the first piece up...

...and the second on top of that to make it the same thickness as the door frame.  We'll paint them someday when everything else gets painted!

Attaching the center support on...

Time to wind up the spring!

And...drumroll...it opens!  We now have a working garage door!

Putting the door handle on the bottom...

There are still a few things Jim will probably tweak on the doors, but it works so it's time to move on!  After removing the form from the concrete pour, we needed some more gravel in front of this door so the Bobcat can move in easier.

One of the items bubbling up on the to-do list is to make the knee wall for the stairwell.  So Jim wanted to move the blocks over to that area so they are ready to go.  We had thought maybe we would get started on this today but there were too many delivery uncertainties.

Jim and I try to find and celebrate all the "firsts" - so this is the first vehicle to come through our open garage door!

Putting the blocks over near the area for the knee wall...

Time once again to work on scaffolding - this time up on the deck!

Yikes - Jim said that the roof ridge is going to be taller than his fingertips!  Pretty scary to think about!

We did a few more measurements up on the deck - the plan is to basically lay out the design of the gable end on the deck, build it and then raise it into place.  We did discover that the caulk we put on the deck between the sheathing and the deck to try and keep water out from below is going to be an issue in getting the track to fit tightly, so I started trying to scrape that out.

Then the Lowe's delivery truck came...

Unfortunately, we were supposed to have 5 windows delivered and only 4 were there.  So that's another big issue that Jim will have to try and resolve tomorrow.

But we got these windows up on the pallet and wrapped them all together to protect them.

  1. I, like Jim, enjoy having a "main focus" every day. Currently, my garage door isn't functional and I've been trying to figure out what’s wrong. Everything from YouTube to Google has left me without result. But, after reading your blog I feel like I have a better understanding of how the system works. So thank you for that.
