8.28.2015

Today was a big switch from focusing on the ground floor slab to getting back to sheathing.  There are just a few loose ends left to do on the slab but since we don't have a concrete date yet, time to switch gears.

Before we could work on the sheathing, lots of scaffolding work had to happen first.  Jim got all the older towers taken down and then started building everything back up.  It's really important if you are going to build high to make sure that the first section is as good as can be.  Since we were kind of piece-parting with old/new scaffolding that didn't always work together, Jim wanted to start fresh.

Building back up....

Then it was time to reacquaint ourselves with tools and procedures for sheathing and get started.  Jim had to make and install one piece of ledger flashing first.

Time for plywood!

Attaching the last piece on the bottom....

Attaching the strapping...

Then the next piece which extended over our window!

After the piece was in place, Jim carefully cut the window opening.

Cutting the other side...  You can see that he put pieces of plywood and screwed them into both sides of the sheathing and the section that was being cut out for the window - that way when he cut the top, the big section of plywood wouldn't come crashing down.

He was able to take the pieces of plywood off carefully and control the cut-out section.

Then we put the last piece in the second row up - the inside is looking very different now.  We miss our view of the woods but it's exciting to see the shop being closed in!

In order to finish screwing in the top of the last pieces we put in, Jim needed to build the scaffolding up higher.  We took this time to build up the other side of scaffolding towers.  The back side takes some work to get scaffolding level because it's all on a hill.

Putting another section of scaffolding on top.

Then he was able to finish screwing in the tops and attaching the strapping.

We stopped work a little early - about 5:00 or so - and went to Home Depot.  Jim had ordered more cross braces for the scaffolding so that he's able to use some of the other sections he has.  Then we can finish that up in the morning and we'll have the whole back set with scaffolding which will make moving higher much easier!
