3.22.2023

Mom and I had haircuts today and then we had lots of errands to do - we even had lunch at Panera!  So it was close to 4:00 before we got home.  Jim had been busy - this bench seat is basically all done!

The only thing left to do is to glue a lip on the top edge to hide the connections of the spars to make a blind dado.  So he's gluing that up...

We picked up another can of paint at Home Depot today so he was able to get another side of this bench frame painted...

3.21.2023

Jim did computer work this morning and then cleaned up the tile in the kitchen, removing the spacers and cleaning up excess adhesive...

He got it taped and ready to seal but because there were so many very small pieces, he's going to wait one more day to make sure the adhesive is set...

Then he headed down to the wood shop to rough plane the new wood he picked up yesterday...

Continuing to plane and sort the wood before stacking what he won't use right now...

Trial fit of the bench seat back pieces...

Doing some millwork on the ShopSmith...

This pieces is what Jim will use to attach the back to the wall...

Looks amazing!!

3.20. 2023

It doesn't quite look like the first day of spring here, as we probably still have over a foot of snow on the ground.  Fine by us - we're in no hurry for the warmer days!

Jim did some work in the shop this morning and then in the afternoon he headed out to the lumberyard - he was basically out of all the wood he's using for the bench seat project.  Getting ready to load up...

Then unloading once he got home!

3.19.2023

Jim took some precise measurements of the next area to be tiled today...

We also were deciding where to put the trim for the section over the stove...

Doing some adhesive clean-up on the area to be tiled after trim application yesterday...

Doing all the cuts for the box area...

Tile layout all done...

Starting to put adhesive on the wall...

Then placing tile...

He had to do a little cutting of the top tiles and then put adhesive on that section...

All done and looks beautiful!  This was a hard section - the receptacle box was so close to the end, plus it worked out that the tiles on the side had to be cut very small.  In fact, Jim had to recut a couple because they chipped.  But it's all worth it when it looks so nice!

He placed the top trim piece for the stove area...

After all the clean up, Jim did some computer work to finish out the day.

3.18.2023

Jim worked this morning laying out the tile for the next section and then cutting all the pieces around the receptacle box...

The new trim pieces came in the mail yesterday, so Jim was able to get them cut and sized...

Starting to put the adhesive on...

Placing the first piece of trim...

Continuing around...

Final piece in place...

Trim all done!

Before grouting, we want to seal the marble tile so Jim started that application...

Working on the other side...

Once the sealer was all applied, Jim buffed it...

With the time left before church, Jim worked in the shop, continuing to make wood pieces for the seat back...

3.17.2023

Happy Green Day!  We celebrated a bit early and had our corned beef and cabbage last night along with pistachio cake, which we'll be enjoying for a few more days.

Jim did computer work this morning before heading down into the wood shop to continue working on the seat back.  He's basically out of wood and needs to make a trip to Northern Hardwoods - hopefully early next week.  He has the top and bottom pieces cut...

Doing some measurements to figure out spar placement...

He did the millwork to make the corners fit perfectly...

Starting to put a coat of paint on another side of the steel frame...

Drying...

3.16.2023

Jim glued up more wood to use for part of the seat back frame...

All the spars and ends are cut and shaped...

We moved the painted seat frame over to the side and then brought up the other frame and Jim started prepping it for painting...

Starting to paint...

First side painted...

Jim had to get the Bobcat out this afternoon and clear off all the snow that fell from the roof.  Mom and I had to go out to the printer and post office so he wanted to make sure it was all clean.
